A GROWING CHANCE FOR CHANGE

Hello, I'm Steven, thanks for landing here and welcome to my site

I am a BACP Registered Psychotherapist.  I enjoy what I do as a vocation, respecting the demands and challenges this brings. I deeply care about my community, our world and your way of being.

If you are living in a way that feels disconnected from the person you feel you could be, due to past events or current relationships & trauma, have a look around and if you feel we could...perhaps we can make a start.

In considering a way to describe how I work, something that sticks in my mind is a client comment: that of all the counsellors they'd ever encountered, I seemed to be the most 'real', contributing to the most naturally effective counselling experience they'd ever had. But that’s just them - you are you.

My aim is to meet you just as you are - however and whoever you are.

I believe in your potential for change, working towards helping utilise your tools in reclaiming inner connection if it seems that life has become unmanageable in many, some, or all of its aspects.

Having had extensive personal therapy as part of my training and now ongoing, I fully embrace the consideration of what life might have been like if I'd had counselling as a young man - this being the catalyst for my original journey in becoming a therapist.

If you have any questions about what it might be like to work together, feel free to get in touch without any obligation for you or expectation from me.

I don't know what you'd like to talk about but I'd be very willing to listen... perhaps we can take it from there.

ABOUT YOU

What brought you here?

You may have arrived here out of curiosity, hope or as a last resort. Perhaps you're trying to overcome barriers - living in a never ending circle, not moving in the direction you want to...going round and round.

These blockages might be clear to you or perhaps you can’t put them into words...but what you do know is...‘this just doesn’t feel right’.

It’s affecting many or all aspects of your life.  Feelings of not being seen, heard or understood by friends, family, partners, tutors, colleagues - or even counsellors, where things just didn’t seem the right fit.

Not understanding these feelings or why you are repeating the same patterns of behaviour over and over again - never getting anywhere, never getting 'over it' as some might say, never feeling free - all preventing you from moving forwards.

Perhaps it's very clear to you

You might be very aware of the experiences, events, emotions and relationships harming you and holding you back - recovering from and/or still experiencing abuse, bereavement, addiction, trauma including toxic relationships and sexual trauma, going through major life changes or loneliness, unhealthy workplace environments with blame culture & negativity, or maybe you are curious about your sexuality and/or gender - all of these aspects and any at all, seemingly large or seemingly small, can affect your whole being, self-esteem and ability just to function...whether they occurred in the past or they’re happening right now as you read this - blocking you and preventing you from living a life you can only dream of.

Maybe there's something more to this?

You may experience the world differently to how other people live - not processing things the way others do.  Being missed by people who just don’t seem to ‘get’ you, and on the other hand...you always seem to notice actual, 'real' things that are happening to us and our world - things that somehow pass by other people’s awareness. How?

Perhaps you’re living with a clinical diagnosis reflecting this or maybe you’re starting to wonder why it feels like this...all the time - maybe there's more to why you are struggling to cope with living like this.  It’s more than anxiety or overwhelm – these racing thoughts getting in the way of your whole life, sometimes creeping up on you when you didn’t notice (and at the worst possible times), making life events difficult to manage, breaking your identity.

You know you're more than capable - you just don’t seem to fit in with the constraints of conformity...whatever that means.

The challenge of change

Whether or not some of this sounds familiar, I believe one thing is certain...

the person who knows the most about what has happened and continues to happen to you............is you.

The challenge of all this knowledge in itself can be too much to deal with - how and where to start to unravel it all might seem like a mountain to climb.

It’s a needle in a haystack.

Where do you start?

If you’re reading this far, perhaps you have taken a first step. You can choose what’s next for you - or 'us’, in deciding if you might like to work together.

I believe you have the power to grow towards a direction that’s meant for you.   If it feels like you’ve tried everything and still see no change in how you are processing things - living in a day-to-day washing machine spin cycle of turmoil, perhaps we could make a start.

I believe that by working with a counsellor change can be possible if the conditions are right for us both.

There’s no doubt in my mind you already have the tools you need...we just need to see if we can find your new life tools together - working on which ones are useful for growth in a new direction, discovering how

you might overcome the effects of events in the past and consider actually 'living' in the present.

ABOUT ME

With over 30 years’ experience across education, corporate, and clinical settings, my life journey has brought me to being a qualified BACP Registered Counselling Psychotherapist (MBACP), supporting clients from the age of adolescence up to those in their eighties.

My work addresses neurodiversity, complex trauma, bereavement, toxic workplace environments, relationship issues, anxiety, addiction and life-limiting diagnoses.  I offer both short-term/fixed numbers of sessions and long-term/open-ended therapy.

My background in the performing arts enriches my practice, fostering a clear and stable emotional expression...always deeply rooted in seeking human connection.

Additionally, (perhaps conversely) my extensive corporate career in the city allows for deep insight into work pressures of varying kinds like burnout and imposter syndrome.

I meet every client as a unique individual, respecting diverse backgrounds and cultural contrast, often experiencing how external differences can bring us closer together and towards a deeper therapeutic connection.

My practice is rooted in The Person-Centred Approach which means that I exercise my capabilities to maximum potential in seeking to understand what it's like to be in your shoes - what's life really like seeing the world through your lens?...then we might begin the process for you to map out a journey away from what is holding you back – be it the impact of past or current events and relationships, concern for future outcomes...or the barriers in your way today - internal, external or both.

Be reassured that while I guarantee kindness, honesty, confidence and trust...this is a unique therapeutic relationship where we will be working together - not simply having a friendly chat once a week.  Agreeable as that seems, there may be others in your life better placed to do that.

I am here to address what is affecting you - with you, as we work together on whatever it is you'd like to talk about, whatever you'd like to say...and however you'd like to say it.

You are warmly invited to share a safe space and see if we can create a way to work through this part of your life, to a point where you might feel you are growing towards a direction that feels like it's meant for you.

'The only person who is educated is the one who has learned how to learn and change' - Carl Rogers

ABOUT US

Working in a confidential space

at your own pace, using your own words...being 'yourself'

Working towards trust and understanding

with me being open and honest...being 'myself'

WORKING TOGETHER

what it might be like for us moving forwards...

Following a rigorous training in the

Person-Centred Approach at The Metanoia Institute,

requiring profound psychological depth and clinical analysis,

my ongoing practice offers an

open, honest, and deeply relational space for clients.

As a counsellor I do not act as a 'distant to you' expert...

and on the other hand,

I am not a ‘nodding dog’ counsellor.  I would describe myself as a constant, reliable and intuitive travel companion - holding the map while you create your journey, at your own pace.

I seek to truly understand what it feels like to be in your shoes...

seeing the world as you see it is a crucial part of

the way my work unfolds with us.

Sessions may bring moments of expressive spontaneity or

quiet stillness and reflection - all held with

inner calm and therapeutic presence.

I do not offer generic fixes because you are not generic;

you are an individual.

My work is geared towards you.

Neither am I trying to ‘therapise’ you...instead, I invite clarity and a

'new noticing' to emerge from the space we  create together.

There is no fixed length in working together - I have worked with clients for years or just a few sessions across a wide range of issues including trauma, grief, psychosis, and terminal illness.

I offer a blank canvas when we start,

ready to listen and for you to consider growth in a new direction.

I offer a free 20-minute introductory online meeting (video or audio) so we can see if we might be the right fit before committing -

During this consultation I will listen to what brings you to therapy,

share how I work and answer any questions you may have.

There is no pressure or expectation; if a different therapist might suit you better, I can likely suggest alternatives.

Ongoing sessions last 50 minutes at £70 per session,

payable in advance and can be online, in person or a mix.

Sessions are usually weekly at the same time,

unless we arrange otherwise.

Endings are planned together thoughtfully and returning clients are welcomed with fresh reflection on what has changed.
